Written by Nova Bradford and Arielle Johnson, this original musical takes audiences into the life of 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, who stands accused of the shocking murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. In an intriguing twist, Mangione shares a prison cell with notorious figures like disgraced crypto executive Sam Bankman-Fried and music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. The show’s creators have designed these characters as exaggerated versions of themselves, allowing them to serve as symbols of failed systems in healthcare, technology, and the entertainment industry.
Connection to Current Events and Social Commentary
“Luigi the character, as we’ve written him, is dead serious about his thoughts and goals,” said composer Arielle Johnson when speaking to the SF Chronicle. The show’s commentary, heavily inspired by the internet culture we live in, reflects a broader societal trend: we often assign value or meaning to individuals based on their infamy.
The musical seeks to engage the audience on themes that resonate with current events, aligning closely with real-life perceptions of social media influencers and personalities embroiled in scandals. Bradford noted that one central theme is the audience's tendency to project meaning onto controversial figures—a reflection of the tumultuous times stirred by Twitter and social media.
Insights from the Creative Team
Producer Caleb Zeringue shared that the original spark for the show came during a conversation at SF Eagle, highlighting the bizarre overlap of these controversial figures' real-life incarceration. With its roots embedded in Bay Area comedy culture, the creators promise a thought-provoking experience that avoids glorifying violence or any alleged crimes carried out by its characters. Bradford stressed, "We’re not valorizing any of these characters, nor trivializing any of their actions or alleged actions.”
