Supporting Creative Journeys: NAMT Grant Recipients for 2024-2025
The National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) has announced its recipients for the 2024-2025 Writers Residency Grants, which are a critical part of the Frank Young Fund for New Musicals. This esteemed program plays a vital role in nurturing the development and production of new musicals, offering essential support to emerging writers and member theatres during the project’s early stages. As Betsy King Militello, Executive Director of NAMT, eloquently states, "Developing new musicals requires space, time, and trust—three things our members provide with immense dedication."
The annual grant, which ranges from $500 to $2,000, is designed to foster collaborative relationships between NAMT member theatres and writers. Among the awarded projects for this cycle are exciting new works, including:
- Desaparecidas by Jaime Lozano, Florencia Cuenca, and Georgina Escobar at the American Music Theatre Project in Chicago.
- Where We Meet by Kate Eberstadt at Ars Nova in New York.
- Legendary by Cheeyang Ng at Goodspeed Musicals in Connecticut.
Other recipients include noteworthy projects like King of Harlem by David Gomez and John-Michael Lyles at Montclair State University, The Phoenix by Cheeyang Ng and Eric Sorrels at New York Theatre Barn, and many more.
A Boost for Future Musicals
The Frank Young Fund for New Musicals has successfully awarded funds totaling over $900,000 to various new works over the past fifteen years, greatly impacting the musical landscape. With events such as the annual NAMT Festival of New Musicals showcasing innovative projects, the future of musical theatre looks promising.
The next application cycle for the Writers Residency Grants is set to begin on May 1, 2025, for projects slated for mid-2025 to end-2025. This continuous support exemplifies NAMT’s commitment to many writers and theatres striving to bring new narratives and innovations to the stage.
