On May 6, a vibrant celebration of young talent unfolded at the Moody Performance Hall as the Lyric Stage presented the 16th annual Schmidt & Jones Awards, honoring high school musical theatre across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. This gala event showcased the incredible performances of students, highlighting their hard work and artistry in their respective productions.
A Legacy of Excellence in Theatre
Nurtured by the vision of renowned composer Harvey Schmidt and lyricist Tom Jones, the Schmidt & Jones Awards aim to recognize excellence in high school theatre since its inception in 2010. According to Scott Guenther, Lyric Stage’s managing and co-artistic director, these awards are a tribute to the “exceptionally talented” students who pour their creativity into their performances while honing their skills for the future.

A panel of esteemed judges, including theatre educators and seasoned professionals, scrutinized numerous productions from schools in the Dallas, Tarrant, and Collin counties. Among the night’s highlights was Grapevine High School's “Sweeney Todd,” which took home multiple awards, including Best Actor for Maxwell Nelson and Best Actress for Roslyn Ackermann. Other notable winners included Matthew Grand as the Supporting Actor in “The Addams Family” and Sienna Dudding as Supporting Actress in “Newsies.” With awards for aspects such as choreography, stage management, and design, this event promotes a well-rounded appreciation of the theatrical arts.
